Accomplishments as a West Basin Director

In addition to participating in the policy and legislative activities of the West Basin Municipal Water District, I am proud of my specific accomplishments during my three terms as a Director.

  • Successfully increased district conservation education, reducing the amount of water that must be imported to Southern California from the environmentally sensitive Sacramento/San Joaquin River Bay/Delta Area.
  • Voted for an expansion of the West Basin Municipal Water District recycled water program, increasing the amount of recycled water used for industrial and other non-potable uses.
  • Produced West Basin's first Water Resource Guide, providing consumers with information on where their water comes from, how to conserve it, and how to keep it safe and reliable.
  • Started the district's annual Water Harvest Festive to increase water awareness among both children and adults to promote conservation, recycling, and water quality protection of this precious resource.
  • Promoted West Basin Municipal Water Districts innovative seawater desalination program, which will ensure that our region has reliable and affordable water now and in the future.
  • Created the "Water Squad" educational program for school children to help them learn how to use water wisely at a young age, developing habits that will hopefully last a lifetime.
  • Chaired the Water Re-use Committee of a major water organization to make sure we use the most up-to-date reclamation technology. This helps the South Bay area maximize its use of reclaimed wastewater for non-potable purposes such as water supply to oil refineries and watering parks and golf courses.

Accomplishments as a Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Director

As part of my duties on the West Basin Municipal Water District Board, I have been proud to represent West Basin as a director on the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Board. The following are some of my accomplishments on the Metropolitan board.

  • Voted to end a private groundwater storage project being promoted by the Cadiz Corporation, ensuring that water supply remains affordable and accessible to all.
  • Voted to implement fluoridation to protect our children's teeth based on the strong recommendation of a united medical, dental, and public health community.
  • Voted to implement an innovative and regional seawater desalination program that will provide incentives for the development of seawater desalination plants throughout the region. This will improve reliability at an affordable cost with a virtually unending source of new water: the ocean.
  • Participated in multiple visits with legislators in Sacramento and Washington D.C. to promote legislation and funding for the Sacramento Bay/Delta and Colorado River water supplies.
